Social Scene
From hoops to galas
There's always plenty to do during the summer. While some people prefer the outdoors, such as those participating in the Carmelo Anthony Foundation basketball tournament, there are many more, such as those at the Associated Black Charities Gala, who prefer the coolness of an air-conditioned venue.
The fourth annual Carmelo Anthony H.O.O.D. Movement took place last month. It benefits disadvantaged children in the city through the Baltimore native's foundation.
The weekend included a three-on-three Challenge basketball tournament and family day at Cloverdale Park. NBA players Chris Paul and Allen Iverson joined Anthony in attending the event.
The weekend also included the unveiling of The Carmelo Anthony Exhibit at the Sports Legends Museum.
Thousands of children attended this year's event, which Anthony hopes to take to other cities in the U.S. The foundation was established in 2005.
Then there was the Associated Black Charities Gala, a normally black-tie event that, for the first time, allowed patrons to dress down as they ate, bowled and played games at Dave & Buster's at Arundel Mills mall.
The event honored current and past athletes, including NBA legend Phil Chenier and former Baltimore Colt Lenny Moore.
Other highlights of the social scene over the past few months include a concert by CeCe Winans, given at Mountain Christian Church in Joppa. The concert was part of a July Fourth weekend of events for the community.
