Pam Shriver's Tennis Classic Auction

The Tremont Grand ballroom was bursting with people and bustling with energy as several hundred guests wined, dined and perused all sorts of silent auction items at Pam Shriver's 23rd annual Charity Tennis Classic Grand Kickoff Reception. Not bad for an event that's been around a lot longer than those it helps support through Greater Baltimore Tennis Patrons and other youth organizations.

Dyslexia tutoring program

Some 350 people packed the Marriott Waterfront hotel's mezzanine for "Wishes, Dreams & Imagination," the sixth-annual fundraising party for Dyslexia Tutoring Program, with almost everyone receiving a personal welcome from the organization's CEO, Marcy K. Kolodny.

Maryland Art Place

Just how does one dress for a fundraising party that has "The Seven Deadly Sins" as its title and theme? If it's for the Maryland Art Place, a little personal creativity comes in handy. For MAP board chair Suzi Cordish, that meant welcoming the evening's guests in a chic cocktail pajama pants outfit.

Babe Ruth Museum

A lineup of athletes - including Sugar Ray Leonard, Dorothy Hamill, Katie Hoff, Kimmie Meissner, Vicky Bullett, Charles Jenkins, Jessica Long and Tom McMillen - is impressive enough. Mingling with them and other sports stars and reporters at a Baltimore party can make you downright giddy.

Port Discovery

Who has more fun than a bunch of kids let loose in Port Discovery? A bunch of grown-ups let loose in Port Discovery and told to "play like you're 10 again." That was the idea behind the children's museum's 10th Birthday Bash.

The Larry and Lori Lickstein Foundation

Hundreds of well-heeled Baltimoreans turned out for the "Steps to the Cure Inaugural Ball," where mannequin legs sprouted on the bar and on tables throughout the room, each outrageously decorated and up for auction. A trellis trimmed with shoes graced one wall; guests could pick a pair to take home. The evening's highlight was a fashion show moderated by a celebrity guest - Project Runway winner ChristianSiriano.

Living classrooms foundation

What's the recipe for a great party? Combine food and drinks from some 50 area restaurants with nonstop music from several blues bands. Blend well at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park. Pour in a couple thousand guests. Serve at slightly cool temperatures, garnished with a sliver of moon over the Domino Sugars sign. Voila! You have "Maritime Magic 2008," Living Classrooms' annual bash.

GBMC Nursing

There are those who party hearty. Then, there are those who party hardy. A few thousand of the latter showed up at Shawan Downs for the Eighth Annual Legacy Chase. Never mind that they had to brave bombarding sheets of rain the entire afternoon. Or that the series of steeplechases was canceled halfway through the afternoon because of that rain. The party continued under various tents set up on a hill overlooking the steeplechase course, even as the ground in those tents went from mushy grass to wading pool.

Dressing up doesn't have to disguise the real you

December 7, 2008

Dear Amy: I'm in my mid-20s. I've spent most of my life in jeans and T-shirts. Dresses make me profoundly uncomfortable, and I don't exactly have the best body.
