Why is Jessamy so upset at study? - August 19, 2008 - Having gratefully escaped being seated on a Baltimore City jury despite multiple summonses for duty, I would have to agree with what Groucho Marx said in a different context: He wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have him as a member.

Annapolis showed why world news is important - December 2, 2007 - Last week's Middle East summit meeting in Annapolis was major front-page news in The Sun, which offered significant coverage for much of the week. While serious gains from the daylong talks appeared unlikely even before they began, The Sun's coverage was, in my view, appropriate for two reasons. First, finding a path to peace in the Middle East is vitally important to the stability of not just that region, but the United States and the rest of the world. Secondly, it was a reminder for readers of the importance of world news.

Michael's strokes, Tippy's pickoffs - August 17, 2008 - As expected, it's all Michael all the time around here these days. With so much bling around his neck, the Incredible Phelps looms now as the most accomplished - if not the greatest - athlete to ever come out of Maryland, and if medals are the measure, he's the greatest Olympian ever. Someday, in Baltimore, there will be a new aquatic center named for him - hopefully in the lower level of the new downtown arena - with a magnificent, life-size bronze of MP in Speedo at the entrance.

Bridges need tougher policing - August 18, 2008 - The Maryland Transportation Authority owns and operates seven toll facilities on behalf of the people of the state. All seven are all critical to Maryland's prosperity and mobility, but the crown jewel is the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge - the Bay Bridge.

Old-time Baltimore was green long before living green was fashionable - August 16, 2008 - Every time I hear about how we need to live more green, I chuckle. Nothing new. I was raised that way - and so were many fellow thrifty Baltimoreans in the 1950s.

From the pool to Hollywood stardom - August 17, 2008 - As Towson-area native Michael Phelps racked up gold medals for swimming at the Olympics in Beijing, I thought it worthwhile to look back at another Olympian, Johnny Weissmuller, who won five gold medals and a bronze at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.
