Smithsonian canoe trips to resume
Canoe trips at the Smithsonian Environmental Education Center were set to resume this weekend after private donors replaced the fleet of boats that were destroyed in a June storm.
The Keith Campbell Foundation and donors chipped in money after high winds and rain tore apart eight of the 10 canoes at the Edgwater facility, along with a canoe shed and a canoe stand recently built by a volunteer Eagle Scout.
The shed and floating public launch are still out of commission but are slowly being rebuilt, spokeswoman Karen McDonald said Thursday.
A family "sunset canoe excursion" was scheduled for yesterday.
