Motorcycle crash kills one; police seek second rider

State police are searching for a motorcyclist who fled from the scene of a crash that killed one person in Howard County on Saturday.

The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. on southbound Interstate 95 just north of Route 100, where a group of six to eight motorcyclists had been driving recklessly at high speeds, according to police.

The driver of a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R750, Wayne N. Thomas, 27, of the 4500 block of 24th Ave. in Mount Rainier, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found that one of the motorcyclists in the group, Thomas, lost control and went off the left side of the roadway, striking the guardrail of the center median. He was thrown from the motorcycle into the left southbound lane and was struck by two vehicles.

As Thomas' riderless motorcycle continued back onto the highway, it was struck by a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750. That rider was also thrown from his motorcycle.

Witnesses said the second rider fled the scene on the back of another motorcycle.

Thomas' body was taken to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

The crash closed southbound I-95 for three hours.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Waterloo barracks at 410-799-2101.
