Meeting set Thursday to discuss culling deer herd
TOWSON Officials who believe an overpopulation of deer is harming the forest around Loch Raven Reservoir will hold a public meeting Thursday to discuss the measures they are preparing to take to thin the herd. They say they plan to use bow hunters starting this fall and sharpshooters this winter to reduce the number of deer that are eating the young vegetation and trees that the forest needs to replenish itself. The meeting with officials from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Baltimore City and Baltimore County will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Loch Raven High School. Kurt Kocher, a city public works spokesman, said the city, which owns the land, will allow licensed bowhunters to shoot deer in the northern parts of the park between Sept. 15 and Jan. 31. Starting in January, the county will hire sharpshooters to cull the herd in the park's southern areas, Kocher said. Wildlife activists say there are other ways to protect the forest than killing deer.
