Crash critically injures Carroll motorcyclist

State police say car crossed center line

A 20-year-old Carroll County man was critically injured Tuesday night after the motorcycle he was riding was struck head-on by a car that crossed a double yellow line in Westminster, state police said.

Police said George Walter Clingan, 80, of the 5000 block of Harney Road in Taneytown was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Lumina south on Taneytown Pike near Hughes Shop Road about 10 p.m. Tuesday when he crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a northbound 2008 Buell motorcycle driven by Benjamin Alden Sochrin of the 2500 block of Old Taneytown Road in Westminster.

Sochrin was flown by a state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was in critical condition this afternoon, according to spokeswomen for state police and Shock Trauma. State police had earlier incorrectly said Sochrin died yesterday.

Police said Clingan was taken by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, where he was treated for injuries and released.

A passenger in the Chevrolet, Jane Louise Clingan, 43, was also taken by ambulance to the hospital and was released after treatment.

Police did not know her relationship to the driver.

The accident remains under investigation.

Editor's note: Because of incorrect information supplied by Maryland State Police, an earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Sochrin was dead. The Sun regrets the error.
