July Fourth activities are set in Bel Air
The Bel Air Independence Day Committee will celebrate Independence Day on Friday with its annual parade and activities.
This year's theme is "A Salute to Those Who Serve Our Country."
Activities start with a flag-raising ceremony at 6:45 a.m. at Bel Air High School, featuring bugler Robert Hudson. A blueberry-pancake and sausage breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 10.
A horseshoe-pitching contest in Rockfield Ballpark and a hamster race at Shamrock Park will both be at 8:30 a.m.
Hays House will offer tours and children's games starting at 9 a.m.
The American History/Patriotic Costume contest will start at 9:30 a.m. at Hays House for age groups 5 and under, 6 to 12 and 13 to 17. A concert of patriotic music with the Catherine Street Consort will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.
Children can put their turtles to the test in the turtle derby at 9:30 a.m. at Shamrock Park or see how high their frogs can jump at 10:30 a.m.
A bicycle decorating contest and rodeo will be held at 11 a.m. for children up to age 13 on the Municipal Parking Lot across from the library, while Uncle Sam Says will be held in Shamrock Park.
A watermelon-seed spitting contest will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Shamrock Park.
The big parade will start at 6 p.m. from Gordon and Bond streets, travel down Bond Street to South Main and Idlewild streets.
The fireworks will go off at 9:30 p.m. at Rockfield Ballpark. In event of rain, the fireworks will be displayed on July 5.
