Community organizers can do great things

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin seemed to belittle the fact that Sen. Barack Obama began his career as a community organizer. But what is wrong with such work ("Palin fires back," Sept. 4)?

In the late 1950s a young black pastor named the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. began to organize the people of Montgomery, Ala.

By the 1970s, this man was dead, but tremendous strides had been made because of his efforts.

And some people wonder why many people think the GOP is out of touch.Denny OlverBaltimore
