Highlights

Despite being home to two colleges, Catonsville tends to be known more as a place to pass through on the way to more prominent neighbors Columbia, Ellicott City or Baltimore rather than a destination of its own. Historically, the town was exactly that -- a crossroads just outside of Baltimore where travelers would stop on their way up the Frederick Turnpike. The business those travelers brought with them is what gave life to the shopping districts that now line Catonsville's main roads of Edmonson Avenue, Route 40 and Frederick Road (the former Frederick Turnpike). The town's excellent shopping and many restaurants and bars make it an optimal stop for a taste of the city without the crowds.

Way too soon to link Obama with Lincoln
I've seen several letters recently that either compare President-elect Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln or draw an analogy between them ("New 'team of rivals' shows real strength," letters, Nov. 25). I think that everyone needs to take a step back and...Tags: Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Government, National Government

Reporting defames victim of slashing
How dare reporter Gus Sentementes end the tragic story of the slashing of Aysha D. Ring by telling the readers Ms. Ring was charged with an "alcohol related" incident a year ago ("Few clues in Catonsville slashing," Nov. 24)? What was the point of sharing...Tags: Apprentices

Cabinet choices limit possible challengers
I have to concede that President-elect Barack Obama is a very shrewd politician ("Obama decides on Clinton, aides say," Nov. 22). One way to ensure his chances to win a second term is to occupy his potential rivals with positions in his administration....Tags: Barack Obama

Will deer devastate the 'seeds of change'?
It was wonderful to read about the city school system's plan to establish an organic farm in Baltimore County to produce healthy fruit and produce for the school cafeteria program ("Seeds of Change," Nov. 24). But the managers of the facility had better...Tags: Patapsco, Plant Diseases, Diseases

Flag remains symbol of rebellion, bigotry
Let's forget the deep racial overtones of brandishing the Confederate flag and concentrate on what the flag really means ("Hopkins balks at Confederate banner," Nov. 20). The "fight for states' rights" (as some Confederate sympathizers call the Civil War)...Tags: United States of America, Guerrilla Activity
