Terps, Devils to face off in Feb. Classic
Organizers add April event featuring UM-Hopkins, Army-Navy at M & T
Not only will the Face-Off Classic college lacrosse doubleheader return to M&T Bank Stadium next season, an additional doubleheader will also be held at the stadium in April, event organizers will announce today. All four games will feature rivalries with significant local or national impact.
The third annual Face-Off Classic, set for Feb. 28, 2009, and again sponsored by Konica, will pit Johns Hopkins against Princeton for the third time. The second game brings together Maryland, playing in the event for the first time, and Duke, its Atlantic Coast Conference rival and a Final Four participant three of the past four years (excluding 2006, when the Blue Devils' season was canceled). The Maryland-Duke game replaces the Syracuse-Virginia matchup of the previous two years.
The Day of Rivals, scheduled for April 11, roughly the midpoint of the season, features the 87th Army-Navy lacrosse game and the 105th meeting between Hopkins and Maryland.
It will be the first time three of those matchups - Army-Navy, Hopkins-Maryland and Maryland-Duke - will be played at the home of the NFL's Ravens.
The two doubleheaders were set up by Inside Lacrosse magazine, which created the Face-Off Classic in 2007 as a marquee event for the opening weeks of the season. The inaugural Classic drew an announced 20,810; last year's attendance was 19,165. Three of the participants in last year's games - Hopkins, Virginia and eventual champion Syracuse - reached the Final Four in Foxborough, Mass.
The new midseason event could answer speculation that arose last year about whether the crowds would grow if the games were played in warmer weather.
Agreement has been reached between the Ravens and event organizers to put on the Day of Rivals for two years at M&T Bank Stadium. Hopkins and Princeton have also committed to play in the Face-Off Classic for two more years, but the second game is not locked in for 2010, although neither Duke nor Maryland has ruled it out yet.
