UM gymnastics coach Nelligan retiring after '09
Longtime Maryland women's gymnastics coach Bob Nelligan will retire at the end of the 2009 season, the school announced. Nelligan's son, Brett, who has been an assistant coach since 2003, has been promoted to associate head coach for the coming season. He will assume head coaching duties beginning May1. Bob Nelligan will end his coaching career after 31 seasons with the Terrapins. He has a career mark of 477-426-4.
College golf: Arizona State placed three among the top 10 finishers in a 75-player field and won the Duramed NCAA Women's Golf Preview tournament at Caves Valley Golf Club with a three-round total of 8-over-par 872. Oklahoma State freshman Caroline Hedwall of Sweden shot a closing 3-under 69 and claimed the individual title with a 54-hole total of 212.
College basketball: Notre Dame will renew rivalries with UCLA and Indiana this season. Notre Dame ended UCLA's NCAA-record 88-game winning streak in 1974. The Irish will face the Bruins for the first time since 2005 when they play at Pauley Pavilion on Feb.7. Indiana will play Notre Dame for the first time since 2004 as part of the Maui Invitational on Nov.24.
NBA: Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant announced that he will undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his right pinkie. Bryant plans to reveal the news on his Web site, kb24.com, and specify the date he intends to have the procedure. Recovery time is expected to be at least six weeks. Bryant postponed having surgery until after the Beijing Olympics, in which last month he helped lead the United States to the gold medal.
Track: Sprinter Xavier Carter, 22, was arrested in Florida for allegedly carrying a concealed weapon. Carter, from Palm Bay, was released from the Alachua County Jail after agreeing to appear on the third-degree felony charge. Police records show Carter was initially stopped Sunday in Gainesville for playing his car stereo too loudly.
