E.J. Henderson out for season
Vikes linebacker suffered dislocated toes; Warner to weigh retirement next year
Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson will miss the rest of the season after being placed on injured reserve because of dislocated toes on his left foot.
Team officials confirmed the move yesterday before the Vikings' game against the New Orleans Saints. They said Henderson ( Maryland) traveled to Baltimore, where Dr. Mark Myerson of the Institute for Foot & Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy Medical Center performed successful surgery.
Henderson was injured during the Vikings' loss at Tennessee on Sept. 28. He returned to the game, but the severity of the injury became more apparent during the past week. Henderson was wearing a boot meant to minimize movement in his foot at the Vikings' training headquarters during the week and had hoped to play later in the season.
Cardinals: Quarterback Kurt Warner says that after this season he will take his closest look yet at retiring from the NFL. The scary injury to teammate Anquan Boldin, combined with other factors, has led Warner, 37, to give more serious consideration to leaving the game. "I'm definitely considering retirement more than I ever have before," the quarterback said, "but that doesn't mean it's more than 50 percent or anything like that. I'm just going to consider it." The comments came after Yahoo.com reported that Warner text-messaged his wife, Brenda, shortly after Boldin's injury last week against the New York Jets, saying he had decided it was time to retire. She said he meant immediately, but Warner said that wasn't the case. Boldin, injured in a head-to-head hit, remains sidelined with a fractured sinus.
Bengals: Coach Marvin Lewis said the team's worst start in six years hasn't diminished his commitment to getting it turned around. A 31-22 loss at Dallas left Lewis' team at the bottom of the league, the only one with an 0-5 record. Three other teams are 0-4. It's a major slip from 2005, when Lewis, a former Ravens defensive coordinator, led the Bengals to their only winning record and playoff appearance since 1991, when owner Mike Brown took over for his father. "Yes, I am very committed to doing the right thing here," Lewis said.
Eagles: All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook broke two ribs early in Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins and his availability for this weekend's game against the San Francisco 49ers is unknown, coach Andy Reid said. Westbrook returned against the Redskins after sitting out the previous week against the Bears. Westbrook suffered the rib fractures on the eighth play of the Eagles' 23-17 loss to visiting Washington. Despite the injury, Westbrook rushed 12 times for 33 yards and caught six passes for 51 yards.
Bills: Quarterback Trent Edwards was described as alert but still experiencing post-concussion symptoms, leaving his status uncertain as the team enters its bye week. Edwards showed up at the Bills' headquarters a day after being slammed to the ground during a loss at Arizona. Coach Dick Jauron said it was too early to say whether Edwards would be ready to play when Buffalo hosts San Diego on Oct.19.
Chiefs: Coach Herm Edwards confirmed that Brodie Croyle will return as the starting quarterback. Since suffering a separated shoulder in the Sept. 7 against New England, Croyle has seen the Chiefs go 1-4.
Giants: An unapologetic Plaxico Burress rejoined the team, noting he didn't lose any sleep being suspended for New York's 44-6 win over Seattle on Sunday. The receiver missed a team meeting two weeks ago without contacting the Giants. He attributed his absence on Sept.22 to a family emergency, which he described as having to take his son to school.
Packers: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss practice again this week with a sprained right shoulder but is expected to play next weekend at Seattle. He played through strain in the loss to Atlanta on Sunday.
Jets: Safety Eric Smith appealed his one-game suspension and $50,000 fine by the NFL for his helmet-to-helmet hit last week on Arizona's Boldin. A ruling was expected by today.
