Girls golf: All-Metro team
Jamie Bare, St. Paul's
Bare, a senior who played
on the varsity for four
years, took second in the Interscholastic
Athletic Association
of Maryland tournament
by shooting an 83.
Bare, who also made the
All-Metro team last year,
played the past two seasons
at No. 1. She will attend Virginia
next year. "Over the
past four years, she has just
been a very consistent player,"
St. Paul's athletic director
Jim Stromberg said.
"She does very well with
putting the ball on the
green."
Hannah Deegan, Roland Park
Deegan, a junior, helped
the team to an undefeated
regular season. She finished
fourth in the IAAM A Conference
individual tournament,
which earned her
IAAM All-Star honors. Her
stellar play also helped the
team win the overall championship.
Bridget Ercole, Bryn Mawr
Ercole was consistently
one of the top golfers in the
metro area. She played
No. 1 for the second consecutive
year and finished fifth
in the conference individual
championships. The junior
helped the Mawrtians
beat undefeated Roland
Park, 2-1, in their match on
April 17. Ercole stuck an
8-iron within three feet of
the pin to win that match.
She also was a captain.
Veronica Gross, Mercy
Gross, a senior, finished
third in the IAAM individual
tournament after a two-hole
playoff. The top four
players in that tournament
were only separated by
three strokes when the
players teed off on the second
day. She played No. 1
all season for the Magic.
"She played steady all
year," coach Harry Bortner
said. "This year, her putting
and short game improved
tremendously."
Suh Huang, Mount Hebron
Huang, a senior, won the
Howard County individual
championship and had a
sixth-place finish in the
state championships at College
Park. Huang also finished
second in the District
V tournament. Huang's biggest
strength is her accuracy
off the tee.
Audra McShane, Centennial
McShane helped Centennial
qualify for its first state
tournament in school history.
McShane, a senior, finished
ninth overall at the
state championships in College
Park. McShane helped
Centennial win the Howard
County regular-season title
and the conference tournament.
She also received a
medal in the District V tournament.
Caitlin Melvin, IND
Melvin, a three-year varsity
player, won the IAAM B
Conference championship.
She shot a 46 on the second
day of the championships
and nearly drove the green
off the first tee. Melvin
helped the Indians to an
undefeated regular season
and the B Conference tournament.
Melvin, a junior,
played No. 1 all season.
"She's improved her game
significantly each year,"
coach Gerard Vetter said.
Liz Silbernagle, Fallston
Silbernagle won the district
championship by
shooting an 81 at Patriot's
Glen. She won the county
individual title with an 86
on a rainy, windy day at Geneva
Farm. She also finished
fifth in the state tournament
at College Park.
"Liz consistently led our
team in scoring throughout
the year, and even though
she's only a freshman, provided
great leadership and
maturity for our team,"
Fallston coach Brian Hulka
said. "Despite her tremendous
talent, Liz remains
humble and is the hardest-working
golfer on our
team."
Lauren Smith, Arundel
Smith finished tied for
second in the state championships
behind Caroline
Sweet of East Roosevelt. She
won the Anne Arundel
County and District V
championships. The junior
also led Arundel to the
team county and District V
championships. "She is [hitting]
much longer," Arundel
coach Phelps Prescott said.
"Her length allows her to
use a lot of lower irons and
attack pins she would never
have been able to attack in
the past."
