Delaney thriving in ACC

The pounding around the boards is a lot harder these days, the elbows are thrown more viciously, tempers flare easily and Virginia Tech freshman guard Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic) seems to be enjoying every minute of it.

Delaney scored 16 points against Georgia Tech on Saturday in a crucial Atlantic Coast Conference victory, three days after he scored nine points in his debut at Comcast Center, where he helped the Hokies upset Maryland.

At a time in the season when freshmen are forgiven a little for fading, Delaney, 18, is coming on strong in coach Seth Greenberg's backcourt.

Delaney gives his older brother, Vincent, a lot of credit for his ability to take the physical beating that sometimes forces players to fade into the background in the ACC.

"He was always bigger and stronger than me," Delaney said of his brother, who played football at Stonehill College. "When I had to play against bigger and stronger guards, I had in my mind-set that it wasn't going to affect my game. I was still going to do what I needed to do."

The Sun's 2006-07 All-Metro Player of the Year said he has always played against "older people. That's built me up and helped me with what I'm seeing in the ACC right now."

Delaney started 16 of the first 27 games for the Hokies, averaging 9.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and shooting 81.1 percent from the free-throw line. He is shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 36.1 percent on three-pointers.

Fulcher is No. 1

York College senior Steven Fulcher (Calvert Hall) became the first swimmer in school history to win the Capital Athletic Conference's Male Swimmer of the Year Award.

At last week's conference championships, Fulcher won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, was second in the 200 backstroke and was a member of three winning relay teams.

During Fulcher's four years on the swim team, the Spartans finished with a 34-5 dual-meet record and two CAC second-place finishes. Fulcher also was selected as the school's Athlete of the Week for Feb. 11-17.

Slosson sparks Generals

Senior midfielder Megan Slosson (Maryvale Prep) scored three goals and had one assist Sunday to lead No. 12 Washington and Lee to a come-from-behind 8-7 lacrosse victory over St. Mary's.

Slosson and the Generals were down 5-2 at halftime before rallying to improve to 2-0. Freshman midfielder Emily Mathews (Bryn Mawr) had a goal and an assist in the victory, and freshman defenseman Kathy Brown (Catonsville) contributed to the win.

Penn honors Cina

Pennsylvania wrestler Vince Cina (River Hill) was one of three seniors on the team honored Sunday before the Quakers' final home match of the season against Lehigh.

Cina has a 6-6 record at 149 pounds this season for No. 25 Penn, which is 13-5, including a 24-15 victory over Lehigh in the last home match.

Senior Andrew Gold (Mount St. Joseph) was 6-0 at 141 pounds for the Quakers this season and has one year of eligibility left.
