Overholtzer drives pitchers batty for UNC-Greensboro

Alumni Report

Former Arundel standout Corey Overholtzer has settled into a .531 batting average for UNC-Greensboro after a .714 start in his first 14 at-bats for the Spartans.

The .714 start included going 7-for-9 during a three-game sweep of a home series against Connecticut. In one of those games, a 15-6 romp, the sophomore outfielder had a grand slam and five RBIs.

Overholtzer is one of the main reasons UNC-Greensboro is 8-4 this season. Last week, he also was selected as Southern Conference Player of the Week .

Before yesterday's 11-10 loss to Clemson, Overholtzer led his team in hitting and slugging percentage (.844), and had two home runs, two doubles, a triple, 11 RBIs and six walks.

Most improved
Massachusetts sophomore guard Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall) averaged 18.1 points this season after scoring 4.5 per game as a freshman, earning him the Most Improved Player Award in the Atlantic 10.

Harris scored 20 or more points in eight of 16 league games and was the conference's Player of the Week twice.

Helping Howard
Howard University sophomore center Paul Kirkpatrick (Randallstown) has started 21 games, averaging 20.7 minutes, 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Kirkpatrick is shooting 61.7 percent from the field for the Bison, who went 6-25 in the regular season.

Freshman Bison forward Anthony Thomas (North County) started four games and averaged 8.7 minutes, 0.8 of a point and 1.1 rebounds

Roanoke four
The Roanoke men's lacrosse team is off to a 2-1 start behind the strong play of four Baltimore-area players, led by sophomore attackman Pat March (Mount St. Joseph), who has nine goals and six assists.

Junior midfielder Chas Carlson (St. Paul's) has three goals and five assists, sophomore defenseman Stephen Simmons (Mount St. Joseph) has 16 ground balls and junior attackman Adam Ariosa (Loyola) has caused five turnovers.
