NASCAR puts Ky. Busch, Edwards on probation
NASCAR placed Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards on probation for the next six Sprint Cup Series races, the result of their on-track incident last weekend at the end of the race at Bristol Motor Speedway. During the cool-down lap after Edwards' Ford took the checkered flag for Roush Fenway Racing, Busch drove alongside Edwards and bumped his car. Edwards responded by driving the nose of his car into the right side of Busch's Toyota, spinning him out.
More auto racing Joey Logano, who will replace two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart in the No.20 Toyota in 2009, will drive in seven Cup races this fall as a tuneup before the 18-year-old star begins his full-time ride at Joe Gibbs Racing.
Boxing Oscar De La Hoya has nearly wrapped up a deal to finish his career Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against Manny Pacquiao, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press. The sources said talks recently revived when the sides found an acceptable way to split the possible $100 million in revenue.
College football One day after announcing that starting quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada would miss the season opener because of a hamstring injury, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo expressed confidence in senior Jarod Bryant. "Not only did he practice in the spring, but he's been in games, in some pressure situations," Niumatalolo said of Bryant. "It's always good when your backup quarterback is somebody that everyone else trusts." Don Markus
NHL The Colorado Avalanche signed Joe Sakic to a one-year, $6 million contract after he decided to play a 20th season in the NHL rather than retire.
Softball Mike Candrea, the Arizona coach whose bid to lead the United States to a second gold medal ended with a loss to Japan in the Beijing title game, stepped down as coach of the national team. Candrea had guided the Americans since 2002 and went 17-1 in Olympic play.
Swimming Eric Shanteau had surgery to remove a cancerous testicle after fulfilling his goal of swimming in the Olympics.
