No. 8 Duke rolls, 80-49, in men's season opener

Kyle Singler scored 12 of his 19 points during the decisive first half, and No. 8 Duke opened its season by routing visiting Presbyterian, 80-49, in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic. Singler added 10 rebounds and Nolan Smith scored 15 points for the Blue Devils (1-0), who used two dominating spurts to overwhelm the cold-shooting Blue Hose, win their 60th straight nonconference game at Cameron Indoor Stadium and improve to 27-2 in home openers under coach Mike Krzyzewski. Lance Thomas and Jon Scheyer added 12 points apiece for Duke, which faces Georgia Southern tonight with a semifinal berth at Madison Square Garden in New York on the line.

More college basketball: Freshman point guard Daniel West has been ruled academically ineligible to play for 14th-ranked Tennessee this season. West was expected to share time at the point with junior college transfer Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince.

College football: Kickoff for Maryland's home game vs. Florida State on Nov. 22 has been set for 7:45 p.m. with the contest being telecast nationally on ESPN. ... Witnesses said a man and his former wife were shot to death over an argument about the Alabama-LSU football game, though a spokesman for the slain man's family disputed that. Dennis James Smith, 41, and Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, were shot to death about 7 p.m. Saturday in the rural community of Owassa in southern Alabama, the Conecuh County sheriff's office said. Michael W. Williams, 28, was charged with two counts of murder in the shooting at his home, where he and others had watched the game.

Hockey: Olie Kolzig got a warm welcome from the crowd in his return to Washington. His former teammates weren't so accommodating. Tom Poti, Mike Green and Eric Fehr scored in the first period, Alex Ovechkin added his first goal in 10 games and the host Washington Capitals beat Kolzig and the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-2. "Olie the Goalie" spent 16 seasons with the Capitals but signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent after last season. ... Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos was suspended for three games without pay by the NHL for his check on Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn. ... Igor Larionov -who starred for Soviet Union national teams that won two Olympic gold medals and went on to win three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers - forward Glenn Anderson, linesman Ray Scapinello, and late junior hockey builder Ed Chynoweth were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Auto racing: Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will stand trial March 2 in Miami federal court on tax evasion charges. Prosecutors say Castroneves and the others tried to hide $5.5 million in income from the IRS.

Golf: Sergio Garcia won the rain-delayed HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, to take the No. 2 spot in the world rankings behind Tiger Woods, beating Oliver Wilson with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff.
