Donovan captures fifth U.S. soccer award

Landon Donovan wants another chance to succeed in Europe. A bust with Bayer Leverkusen during two previous stints in Germany, he began training with Bayern Munich - the same day he was voted U.S. Player of the Year for a record fifth time. Donovan, 26, led Major League Soccer this year with 20 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

More soccer: The U.S. Amateur Soccer Association recently named Baltimore resident Frank Assaro as its Coach of the Year based on his current and longtime success as coach of the Baltimore Colts soccer team, an unlimited men's team that plays in the Maryland Major Soccer League. Assaro led the Colts to a runner-up finish in the 2008 USASA Men's National Amateur Cup. GLENN GRAHAM

Colleges: Maryland (18-2), the Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey champion, was awarded the top seed in the NCAA tournament and will host Albany (12-9) in the first round Saturday. ... No.8 Duke (2-0) rolled into the 2K Sports Classic semifinals with a 97-54 men's basketball victory over visiting Georgia Southern (1-1).

NHL: Jordan Staal had a hat trick in the third period and set up Ruslan Fedotenko's winning goal with 1:11 left in overtime, lifting the Penguins to a 7-6 comeback victory over the host Red Wings in a rematch of last season's Stanley Cup Finals, won by Detroit in six games.

McKay: To honor the memory of pioneering sports journalist Jim McKay, the NCAA has created a new postgraduate scholarship in his name in the field of sports communications. As part of the Jim McKay Scholarship program, one male and one female athlete will be selected annually to receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Swimming: American Peter Marshall and South African Cameron van der Burgh set world records at a World Cup meet in Stockholm, Sweden. Marshall won the 100-meter backstroke in 49.94 seconds, breaking Ryan Lochte's record of 49.99 set in 2006. Van der Burgh broke his own 50-meter breaststroke record by winning in 25.94.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic defeated Nikolay Davydenko, 7-6 (3), 0-6, 7-5, to reach the ATP Masters Cup semifinals in Shanghai, China.
