In early 2002, he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer; surgeons removed the cancer in February of that year. He went in for surgery again in 2003 for cancer in his salivary gland. In December 2003, he underwent a four-week course of radiation treatment, which altered his voice slightly. He again went in for surgery in June 2006 to remove cancer near his right jaw and a section of his jaw bone. After Siskel's death, the show was renamed "Ebert & Roeper and the Movies." Guest critics have sat in Ebert's chair since his illness.
