The center is the center of the University of Maryland Medical System, a regional network of facilities that includes Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Maryland General Hospital, Kernan Hospital, University Specialty Hospital, Mt. The center itself includes the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. All of the center's physicians are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The center has achieved many medical milestones since its inception in 1823 as the Baltimore Infirmary, including being a leader in minimally invasive surgery. It was the first hospital in the Mid-Atlantic region to perform minimally invasive artery bypass surgery using a surgical robot, the da Vinci S Surgical System, which speeds patient recovery compared to traditional surgery techniques. Also, the center was one of the first to widely use minimally invasive kidney removals from living donors, a method that has been adopted across the United States and has increased the number of living kidney donations.
