Vokoun played eight seasons in Nashville - all but one of his 384 career National Hockey League games before becoming the Panthers' No. 1 goaltender for the 2007-08 season. He replaced Ed Belfour and Alex Auld, who shared net-minding duties for one season after the departure of Roberto Luongo and were not re-signed. Vokoun, whose favorite player growing up was legendary Czech goalie Dominik Hasek, was only an 11th round pick (226th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1994 draft. He played one game for the Canadiens before the Predators plucked him away in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft. Vokoun won 25 or more regular-season games his final four seasons with the Predators, helping lead them to their first ever playoff appearances his final three seasons. He joined the Panthers with a career 161-159-46 record, 2.55 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. Vokoun missed 20 games during the 2006-07 season because of a hand injury and sat out the final eight games of the 2005-06 regular season and the playoffs because of a blood clot in his leg. In 2005-06, he still finished fourth in voting for the Vezina Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's top goalie. Before his blood condition in 2006, Vokoun led the Czech Republic to a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He was named an All-Star during the 2003-04 season. Vokoun made 29 saves in his homecoming to Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 27, 2007, and was cheered when announced during pregame introductions and when a video montage of him was shown during a first-period timeout at Sommet Center. The Panthers lost 4-3, however, after Jerred Smithson scored with 13 seconds left in the third period for the Predators. While a Predator, Vokoun was a popular figure off the ice because he spent much of his free time visiting young cancer patients at the children's hospital at Vanderbilt University and watched games with them while injured last season from a luxury suite at Sommet Center he bought for them. Tomas Vokoun currently lives in Parkland, Florida.
